Supermarine were offered the chance by our community partners London Irish RFC to attend the London Double Header Festival of Rugby held at the home of Harlequins RFC, The Stoop in Twickenham. We were delighted to be able to send the U8s and U10s to do battle with the teams from all the 4 London sides,LI, Harlequins, Saracens and London Wasps.

In the morning the sides had to play in 4 pool matches, the outcome of which would decide who had the chance to play that afternoon on the pitch at Twickenham during the intervals for the main event, the London Double Header!

The U8s fought valiantly and put in their usual positive display of sportsmanship but were unable to make the finals.

The U10s ran out winners over Old Elthamians (6-3), Upminster (6-5), Oakmedians (6-2) and Stockwell Park (8-1) which gave them the chance to play the tournament favourites and previous winners Andover RFC at Twickenham in the half time interval of the match between Saracens and London Wasps.

“Speaking to Andovers coaches before the game it was clear that they were a powerful side, having been able to pick their finest team of 12 from over 40 regular U10s players. We had two U9s playing in our team of 12 but were determined to continue our rich vein of form” said U10s head coach Hywel Rees.

As the match kicked off it was obvious that both sides were out to make the most of their opportunity at HQ and a fast and furious game ensued, with pace aplenty and no shortage of skill on either side. Eventually Supermarines more intensive support play told over their illustrious opponents and they ran out winners 5 tries to 3.

As they returned to their seats in the North Stand they were applauded by their parents and families, but also by all the other supporters sat in the area and the stewards who looked after us that day.

It was a tremendous result and a fabulous day all told, one that none of the families or players will ever forget. Keep your eyes peeled. I have a feeling that won’t be the last time some of those players run out at Twickers!
