COMMITTEE STATEMENT
The Supermarine RFC Committee is responsible for the overall leadership, governance and smooth running of the club. Our volunteer committee works together to create a welcoming, safe and sustainable environment where players, coaches, volunteers and supporters can enjoy rugby at every level.
WHAT WE DO
Strategic leadership & governance: Set the club’s vision, long-term goals and policies; ensure the club operates transparently, ethically and in line with the laws and regulations that affect amateur sport.
Financial stewardship: Prepare and oversee the club budget, manage income and expenditure, ensure accurate financial records, and seek funding, sponsorship and grant opportunities to keep the club viable and growing.
Safeguarding & welfare: Maintain and review safeguarding policies, safe recruitment and training for staff and volunteers, and ensure welfare of children and adults at risk is prioritised in all club activities.
Operations & facilities: Manage the upkeep, safety and development of club facilities, equipment and grounds; arrange pitch maintenance, clubhouse needs, and health & safety compliance.
Coaching & player development: Support and develop our coaching provision, youth sections and player pathways — from beginners and minis to senior sides — including training programmes, coach education and talent development.
Membership & communication: Oversee membership administration, subscription processes and member communications; keep players, families and supporters informed through the website, newsletters and social media.
Match-day & events management: Coordinate fixtures, match officials, volunteer rotas, first aid cover and logistics for home and away games; organise club events, fundraising activities and social occasions that build community.
Volunteer recruitment & support: Recruit, recognise and support volunteers and officials; ensure they have the resources, training and guidance needed to fulfil their roles.
Equality, diversity & inclusion: Promote an inclusive club culture where everyone is treated fairly and respectfully, irrespective of age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation or background.
Compliance & relationships: Maintain relationships with the RFU/County Union, local authorities, partner organisations and sponsors; ensure the club follows governing-body rules and reporting requirements.

Our Legacy
Honoring Tradition, Embracing Progress
Supermarine RFC began life in 1958 as the Vickers Armstrong factory side at South Marston, on the edge of Swindon. The driving force was Norbert “Bob” Little, whose persistence overcame early resistance from management and even the lack of a home pitch. In the early seasons every fixture was played away; when permission finally came to mark out pitches on the nearby airfield, the posts had to be taken down after each match because management believed they might “attract birds.”

In 1966 the company rebranded as Vickers (Swindon) Ltd, and the rugby side adjusted its name accordingly. A more dramatic change arrived in 1980 when the airfield site was sold to Honda UK and Vickers began winding down local operations. With the factory identity fading, the club adopted the name “Supermarine,” honouring the Vickers-Supermarine heritage and the Spitfires produced at the South Marston works during the Second World War.

The early 1980s were a period of upheaval and growth. From 1985 the club was briefly nomadic, playing on a strip of ground outside the new Honda perimeter—affectionately nicknamed “the rockery”—and waiting on security patrols to return any balls that cleared the fence. By 1988 Supermarine secured its long-term home on Supermarine Road, though early days there were far from easy: construction damage to drainage left the pitches prone to flooding before the surfaces were steadily improved into the manicured fields the club enjoys today.
Supermarine’s Mini & Youth section was launched in 1982 with just a handful of children and a few enterprising parents; today it serves hundreds of young players each season thanks to an army of qualified coaches.
In 1990 the Ladies section was formed after a local newspaper call-out—an initiative that has since produced capped internationals and now competes at Championship level, one tier below the Premier division.

From its factory-team roots to a modern, community-based club welcoming men, women, girls, boys and veterans, Supermarine RFC has stayed true to Bob Little’s original vision: rugby for all, played with passion and sportsmanship, on and off the field. #BlueFamily.
